Maintaining the Long-Term Transparency of Polycarbonate

Transparency is one of the key advantages of polycarbonate. However, prolonged exposure to UV radiation can gradually alter its optical appearance: the surface may begin to yellow, while the component’s original transparency may decrease as the duration of exposure increases.

With GODIBATCH UVP 8426/PC, Godiplast offers a UV protection masterbatch specifically formulated for transparent polycarbonate applications.

The product is suitable for both injection molding and extrusion and helps improve the light stability of PC components during prolonged exposure to UV radiation.

Protecting the polymer where UV exposure matters most

Polycarbonate naturally absorbs UV radiation. Over time, this energy particularly affects the surface of the component and can accelerate visible ageing.

The UV absorber incorporated into Godibatch UVP 8426/PC captures a significant part of the incoming UV radiation and dissipates the absorbed energy as heat. This reduces the impact of UV exposure on the polymer and helps maintain the optical appearance of the finished part for longer.

Dosage adapted to the real application

There is no single dosage suitable for every component.

The appropriate concentration depends primarily on:

• wall thickness of the finished part
• geographical area of use
• expected UV exposure
• pigmentation and optical requirements

A typical addition rate is approximately 2.0–5.0%, corresponding to a UV protection capacity of around 150–250 kLy.

For orientation, typical annual UV exposure values are:

Central Europe: approx. 70–80 kLy/year
Southern Europe: approx. 100–120 kLy/year
USA: approx. 120–160 kLy/year

This makes it possible to define the dosage according to the expected service conditions rather than applying an unnecessarily high additive level.

Food-contact applications

The raw materials used are listed under EU Regulation No. 10/2011 and may be used subject to the applicable restrictions, including specific migration limits (SML).

Compliance of the final plastic article must nevertheless be assessed and, where required, verified by appropriate migration testing.
