Masterbatches for Laser Marking

High-contrast Marking with Masterbatch LAS

In recent years, laser marking has become well-established as a fast, precise, and clean method for marking plastic surfaces.

In this process, the inscription is achieved by focusing a highly energetic light beam (Nd:YAG or CO2 laser) onto a specific point of the component surface. Due to the surface absorption of the polymer, the irradiated area melts with a subsequent change in color.

In principle, three types of marking can be distinguished: carbonization, foaming, and ablation (see figure above). The choice of marking method depends not only on the type of plastic used but also on the desired appearance of the marking.

In addition to plastics such as SAN, ABS, and PC, which can be marked effectively with a laser, there are polymers where a sharp and high-contrast marking is only possible by adding special additives. This is where the Masterbatch LAS comes into play!

Benefits of Masterbatch LAS:

  • Permanent and high-contrast marking
  • No surface pretreatment required
  • Application of variable data

Examples of Applications/Specialties of Masterbatch LAS:

  • Marking buttons, knobs, and rotary controls
  • Application of IDs (e.g., cable applications or animal ear tags)
  • Labeling on food packaging
  • Marking highly transparent plastics
  • Combination batch (laser additive + color)
